Of course, there were a lot of things we didn’t have as humans back in the paleolithic era. Humans had no cell phones or computers and didn’t ride in planes, trains, or automobiles. Does that mean we shouldn’t do so now?
This argument against eating a plant-based diet for industrialized society makes no sense when you see how many things we do differently now that we know about vitamins, minerals and other supplements that make human health so much better than it was back in hunter gatherer times.
Vegans do not say that humans have always eaten a 100 percent vegan diet for the entire history of humankind. What we do say is that a vegan diet makes the most sense for most humans in the industrialized world now because we are conscious, creative, compassionate individuals who want to preserve animals and their habitat to the best of our ability while still eating delicious affordable food every day.
And now that we are an advanced culture with many more food choices than our ancestors had we can eat an optimal diet without the cruelty of factory farming or using animals against their will for clothing, leather, or entertainment. Our reasoning for this new diet is that we no longer have to be stoic and cruel to survive so why should we?
Most people do not enjoy working in factory farms. It is employment reserved for those on the lowest rung of the economic totem pole. People who do this work have a lot of health and psychological problems that are often not dealt with because of financial inability. The normalization of mass violence trickles into the rest of society. There is no way to do mass factory farming without the rest of society becoming numb and brutal. Just look at most of the movies. There is so much normalized gore and violence everywhere you look. The treatment of women, pornography, violence are all part of this sick system of mechanized brutality that is very new over the past 150 years or so.
Having to compartmentalize our kindness to certain animals that we call “pets” while feeding other animals to our beloved family members breeds a sick kind of schism within our minds and hearts. Luckily, we have a choice to stop being insensitive to our environment and the beings who share the planet with us.
We have the technology to safely eat a plant-based diet with the proper nutrients and supplements while helping to end climate change rapidly before all the wild animals are gone forever and before the beauty of the earth is destroyed for the next generation of humans.
It’s time to become Fiercely Vegan for the animals and the planet and for future generations. We no longer have the luxury to be meekly worried that our vegan food choices might make someone else uncomfortable. We must begin to speak up for the animals who are suffering by the billions every year, and for the habitat that is being destroyed for our kids and grandkids. We must ask ourselves: what kind of world do we want to leave behind?
